Hip Replacement Outcomes

‹ PATIENT OUTCOMES AND RESULTS

How Dr. Sloan’s total hip replacement patients report their function and pain, from before surgery through long-term recovery.

Hip Function Over Time (HOOS, JR.)

The Hip disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score for Joint Replacement asks patients about stiffness, pain and everyday activities such as walking, climbing stairs and getting in and out of a car. Scores range from 0 to 100; a higher score means better hip function.

Meaningful Improvement at One Year

Researchers use two thresholds to judge whether a change in HOOS, JR. score matters to patients: the minimal clinically important difference (MCID), the smallest improvement patients notice as meaningful, and the substantial clinical benefit (SCB), a larger improvement linked to patients feeling much better. Results include patients who completed the survey both before surgery and at one year.

  • MEANINGFUL IMPROVEMENT (MCID): 81% — Of hip replacement patients reached a meaningful improvement in hip function by one year.
  • SUBSTANTIAL IMPROVEMENT (SCB): 77% — Of hip replacement patients reached a substantial improvement in hip function by one year.
