I’m an orthopedic surgeon, but most of my job isn’t surgery — it’s helping people decide whether they need it.
Every week I meet patients who’ve been told they need a joint replacement by one surgeon and told to wait by another. Who’ve read ten conflicting things online. Who are scared, or skeptical, or just tired of hurting. My practice is built for those people: clear answers, honest opinions about when surgery isn’t the answer, and — when it is — the most precise techniques available.

Training & background
A Massachusetts native, Dr. Sloan earned his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Pennsylvania — five years of high-volume training in primary and complex joint reconstruction alongside national leaders in the field.
He was then selected for a competitive total joint replacement fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital / Harvard Medical School, with advanced training in partial knee replacement, custom total knee replacement, robotic-assisted hip and knee replacement, anterior hip replacement, outpatient joint replacement, and complex and revision joint replacement.
He was the first fellowship-trained joint replacement surgeon to bring these advanced techniques from Boston to the Emerson Hospital community — so patients in the region can get complex, high-level orthopedic care close to home instead of traveling into the city.
Philosophy
Dr. Sloan combines advanced surgical techniques, robotic technology, and personalized care to help patients return to an active, pain-free life — and he’ll tell you honestly when the right answer is not surgery.
Beyond the operating room
Dr. Sloan founded MatthewSloanMD.com (formerly Hip & Knee Relief) and hosts the Joint Replacement Podcast because he believes patients make better decisions when they have better information — clear, evidence-based, and free of marketing spin. The podcast’s 58 episodes cover the full journey: what arthritis is, when it’s time for surgery, how to choose a surgeon, what happens in the OR, and what recovery really looks like.
Specialized expertise
- Treatment of joint replacement infections
- Revision (redo) hip and knee replacement surgery
- Periprosthetic fractures (fractures around joint implants)
