Most surgeons operate. Dr. Sloan also studies how to make surgery safer — and publishes the results so the whole field gets better.

He earned a master’s degree in Public Health (Epidemiology and Biostatistics) from UMass Amherst before medical school, which means he’s trained to do what most surgeons can’t: analyze tens of thousands of cases to find out what actually improves outcomes — and what doesn’t. That research mindset shapes every operation he performs.

What his research means for you

Dr. Sloan has published more than 40 peer-reviewed studies in the top orthopedic journals. In plain English, his work focuses on:

  • Getting patients home safely the same day — including studying same-day discharge in elderly patients
  • Preventing infections after joint replacement, and treating them when they happen
  • Making surgery safer with technology — robotics, computer navigation, and better planning
  • Understanding risk — how nutrition, weight, and other health factors affect surgical outcomes
  • Fixing failed joint replacements — trends and techniques in revision surgery
  • Fairness in care — studying racial disparities in who gets joint replacement, and pushing to close the gap

Watch: Dr. Sloan presenting his AAHKS 2021 research — age alone shouldn’t rule out same-day partial knee replacement

The paper everyone’s citing

Dr. Sloan rose to national prominence with his 2018 paper projecting how many hip and knee replacements America will need through 2030. It’s become one of the most-cited publications in orthopedic surgery of the past decade — hospitals, policymakers, and device companies still use it to plan for the coming wave of joint replacements.

Recognition

His research has earned national recognition, including:

  • Marvin Steinberg Award for Excellence in Arthroplasty — a national award honoring outstanding joint replacement research
  • DeForest Willard Award for Service
  • University of Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Surgery Resident Research Award
  • AAOS Annual Meeting Top 10 Poster
  • Alpha Omega Alpha — election to the national medical honor society

He’s been invited to present his research at the largest national orthopedic meetings, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, the Hip Society, the Knee Society, and the Orthopaedic Research Society.

In the media

He’s been interviewed about his research by The New York Times, CNN, Reuters, Popular Science, and the Arthritis Foundation.
