‹ PATIENT OUTCOMES AND RESULTS
How Dr. Sloan’s total knee replacement patients report their function and pain, from before surgery through long-term recovery.
Knee Function Over Time (KOOS, JR.)
The Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score for Joint Replacement asks patients about stiffness, pain and everyday activities such as walking, climbing stairs, kneeling and bending. Scores range from 0 to 100; a higher score means better knee function.

Meaningful Improvement at One Year
Researchers use two thresholds to judge whether a change in KOOS, JR. score matters to patients: the minimal clinically important difference (MCID), the smallest improvement patients notice as meaningful, and the substantial clinical benefit (SCB), a larger improvement linked to patients feeling much better. Results include patients who completed the survey both before surgery and at one year.
- MEANINGFUL IMPROVEMENT (MCID): 77% — Of knee replacement patients reached a meaningful improvement in knee function by one year.
- SUBSTANTIAL IMPROVEMENT (SCB): 66% — Of knee replacement patients reached a substantial improvement in knee function by one year.
